Gluten Free Lifestyle

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

This workshop is being moved to a new date! Please call for more details.

Join Dr. Linda Collins and Sandi Star, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, for an informative seminar on the importance of gluten free nutrition.

Families with autistic children are especially welcomed to attend.

Saturday- April 3rd- 2010 11:00AM-1:00PM

The Gluten and Casein Free Diet for children with autism is a dietary intervention to lessen the digestive and bowel, and behavioral issues sometimes found in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Recent research indicates that there are children with a genetic predisposition to the disorder, which is then triggered by some as yet undetermined event–a vaccine, environmental toxin, or virus–which can cause a “leaky gut” (sometimes evidenced by resulting chronic loose stools as the child cannot properly digest these proteins). If this happens, wheat and dairy are then metabolized as opiates. It is believed that by eliminating gluten (wheat) and milk protein (casein), the gut will begin to heal and the child’s overall condition will improve somewhat.

Kids Yoga Workshop

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

With Parent Support Group
Saturday, March 13, 2010  11am-12:30pm

Yoga with the kids

Join us for an exciting yoga workshop for children 6 to 10 years old who have attended STAR Level 2 groups or have been diagnosed with High Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.

Kids will participate in a 1-hour yoga workshop exploring movement, learning yoga poses, and interacting with peers. The group will be facilitated by a certified yoga instructor with additional behavioral aides for a 1:2 staffing ratio. During this time, parents will participate in a mindfulness-based support group.  This group will combine basic breathing and beginning meditation practices for relaxing and coming back to the present moment.  These practices have been found to reduce stress responses and increase our ability to calm our body and mind.  Meditation practices will be combined with an opportunity to discuss parenting stressors, self-care, and causes of challenging child behaviors with a licensed Clinical Psychologist and other parents of children diagnosed with High Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.

At the conclusion of the two workshops, parents will join the kids for a showcase of yoga and healthy snacks. This introductory workshop is part of a new series that will be offered for 4 sessions throughout March and April.

Date:  Saturday, March 13, 2010  11am-12:30pm

Cost: $40/ for both child and parent

This workshop is Limited to 6 children and parents

To register, call 858.566.6514 or sign up on our Event Registration page to reserve your space.

Please Note: If your child has not participated in a STAR Level 2 group, the parent and child must meet 30 minutes prior to the workshop for an intake meeting. The cost for this intake assessment is $45.

Military Deployment and Affects on the Family

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The Center for Mind and Body Wellness is well aware of the difficulties that can affect military personnel and their families during and after deployment. More than 1.6 million United States service members have served in Iraq or Afghanistan and as many as 15% suffer from Post Traumatic Stress, depression, anxiety, and/or substance abuse (1). Veterans often return feeling changed by their experiences and have a difficult time expressing what they are feeling to their families.

Children’s emotional reactions to having a deployed parent vary but may include anxiety, temper tantrums, changes in eating habits, decline in academic performance, and physical complaints. Adolescents may express themselves by acting out and/or withdrawing from friends and family (2). The parent that was left behind may experience an increase in family responsibilities, anxiety, loneliness, and fear regarding their loved one’s safety (3).

It’s important that everyone in the family gets the help they need. Adjusting to changes within a marriage and as a family can be stressful. Talk as a family, continue family traditions and develop new ways to have fun together, and be sure to practice good self-care such as exercise and proper nutrition. Remember that it is okay to ask for help from friends, extended family, and/or a professional.

Anchor to Your Breath!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

This time of dramatic change can create intense worry and tension. When you notice your mind racing far ahead of the present moment you can turn down the potential stress by learning conscious breathing.

I attended my first meditation retreat with the venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Master, in the summer of 2000 and was introduced to the practice of conscious breathing. What a simple but powerful practice, to be aware of your incoming and outgoing breath. Not only does this give your mind and body an opportunity to pause and relax, you also can anchor back to the present moment.

So, do an experiment, the next time you feel worried or tense take a conscious breathing break. Let your awareness rest on your incoming and outgoing breath and anchor to your breath by focusing on two simple phrases: “Breathing in, I know I am breathing in” and “Breathing out, I know I am breathing out”.

Practice three times a day whether you need it or not.
